If you have forgotten one of your passwords or it has expired, the password will need to be reset either online or in person at the OIT Service Center in the Commons in Hodges Library. For security reasons, the OIT HelpDesk cannot reset any password via phone or email.
NetID/Tmail/Active Directory Passwords: You can reset your NetID/Tmail/Active Directory passwords in one of three ways.
Option 1: Online Password Reset
(In order to use this function, you will have to enable the online reset tool under the NetID/Tmail/AD Password section at https://ds.utk.edu/passwords )
2.     Click on the NetID/Tmail/AD Password link.
3.     Click on the Forgot Your Password link.
4.     Choose Online Password Reset.
5.     Enter your NetID, your UT ID Number*, your birthdate, and click continue.
6.     Answer the security questions listed. Once you have correctly submitted the answers, you will be prompted to create a new password.
Your new password will take up to 15 minutes to take effect.
*Your UT ID Number can be one of 3 numbers.  Any of these numbers should work to use this tool.  The numbers are (1) your Student ID Number which begins with a 000, (2) your Employee ID number, i.e. 123456, or (3) the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number.
Option 2: Initial Password Setup for First Time Users

3.     Choose First Time Password Setup.
4.     Enter your NetID, your UT ID Number*, your birthdate, and click continue.
5.     You will be prompted to setup 3 security questions if you have not already done this.
6.     You will then be prompted for a new password.
Your new password will take up to 15 minutes to take effect.

Option 3: In Person
If you are unable to reset your password using the online reset tools, you can have your password reset in person at the OIT Service Center in the Commons in Hodges Library. Photo ID is required.  For security reasons, passwords cannot be reset via phone or email.
UNIX Passwords: There is no online reset function for a UNIX password. If your UNIX password is forgotten or expired, you will need to visit the OIT Service Center in the Commons to have the password reset. Photo ID is required.  For security reasons, passwords cannot be reset via phone or email.
PLEASE NOTE:  Changing your password can affect many services. Please read below for more information.
  • Your e-mail client: You must close your email client (Outlook, ActiveSync, OWA, etc.) before changing your password. If you fail to do this step, your account could be locked out. Once you have successfully changed your password, wait ten minutes for your new password to take effect before attempting to log back into your email account using your new password.
  • Your workstation: If you use Active Directory (AD) to authenticate to your computer or are in an OIT lab, you will need to log out of the computer and log back in after you change your password.
  • Saved passwords: Some people like to save their passwords into certain applications so they do not have to enter their password every time they choose to login to that application. If you have saved your password within an application, be sure to change the saved password.
  • OIT Lab computers: If you are using an OIT lab computer to change your password, you will need to log out of the computer and log back in using the new password.
