What are My Passwords? Why do I have More Than One Password? What Are They Used For?

As a University individual, you can have up to two different passwords for your OIT accounts. The passwords are NetID/Tmail/Active Directory and UNIX.  Each password below is associated with a different account, and due to security policy, each will expire 180 days from the day it is changed. You will receive email notices for each password when it is within two weeks of its expiration date.

NetID: Your NetID password allows access to campus online academic systems (Blackboard, Circle Park Online, Financial Aid, etc) and most sections of the UT webpage that require authentication.

Active Directory (AD): The Active Directory password is used primarily to access your Exchange email account on the University’s Tmail system.  OIT Computer Labs use the AD password for authentication.  The AD password is also used in many departments to login to the workstations. 

UNIX: Your UNIX account password is used to access your web/file storage on the University’s central UNIX servers. Any interface used to access this storage such as Volspace or a secure FTP client will require your UNIX password.

To make your passwords easier to remember, we recommend that you go ahead and set all of your passwords to be the same.  We also recommend that your reset them at the same time.
