Installation Instructions for Windows 2000 and the Lucent/Orinoco Wireless Card |

For more information about wireless, please visit our wireless website at http://wireless.utk.edu. Important NotesYou may need your Windows 2000 CD to install this card. Please note there are many things in these instructions that are case sensitive. You may see the following screen during the driver installation. In the blank at the bottom type in "x:\win2k". Where "x" is your CD-ROM drive letter.
You may need to update the firmware on your card. You can do this after you have installed the drivers correctly. Follow the directions at the end of this packet. INSTALLING THE CARD1. Turn on your laptop and make sure it is finished loading all programs. 2. Put the wireless CD into your CD-ROM drive 3. Insert the wireless card into your PCMCIA slot. 4. Windows should find the wireless card and automatically install a driver for the device. However, this is the wrong driver. 5. After Windows finishes the install, right click on My Computer. Select Propertiesfrom the menu. 6. Click on the hardware tab at the top of the window that looks like the screen below. Next, click on the Device Managerbutton.
7. Click on the plus sign next to Network adapters as shown in the picture below. Double click on WaveLan/IEEE PC Card (5 volt).
8. Click on the Driver tab at the top of the window as shown in the picture below. Click the Update Driverbutton at the bottom of the window.
9. The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard should start. Click Next. On the next screen choose Search for a suitable driver for my device. Click Next. 10. The next screen will have several check boxes. Check the option labeled Specify a locationand uncheck any others that are checked. Click Next.
11. As shown below, the next screen will have a field where you can type the location of the drivers. Type "x:\win2k" where "x" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM and then click the OK button.
12. You should now see the following screen. Check the box labeled Install one of the other drivers. Click Next.
13. Select the driver labeled Orinoco PC Card (5 volt) as shown in the picture below. Click Next. Then click Yeson the window named Digital signature not found. The computer should now copy the necessary files. Then click on Finish.
Note: The below window may appear several times during the installation. Click OK.
14. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click yes. If not, restart the computer yourself. When your computer finishes booting, continue to next step. INSTALLING THE CLIENT MANAGER15. Once the card is installed, double click My Computer, then double click on your CD-ROM drive, then double click on Win2k, and finally double click on Cl_Mgr. 16. Run the file labeled Setup. 17. Proceed with the installation using the default settings. 18. Next, click Start, then go to Settings, then finally go to Control Panel. 19. Inside the Control Panel you should see the following icon. Double click it.
20. The following screen should appear. Click the Edit button.
21. This will begin the wireless profile wizard. In the profile name blank, type UT. Click Next. In the network name blank, type nomad. Click Next.
22. Click Next two times. 23. As shown in the screen below, check the box labeled Renew IP Address when selecting this profile. Click Finish.
24. Close the control panel. 25. Restart your computer. GENERAL INFORMATIONAfter you restart your computer, you may see green or orange bars in the system tray. This usually means that wireless connectivity is available in your location. These bars must be present for a wireless connection to be established. UPDATING THE FIRMWARENote: To update firmware, your card must be in your computer and you must have your power cord plugged in. Turn on your laptop and make sure it is finished loading all programs. Put the wireless CD into your CD Rom drive. Double click "My Computer". Double click your CD-ROM drive. Double click the folder for your operating system. Double click firmware. Double click WSU10752.exe. Click the Update button. Read the message that follows. Click OK.
REGISTRATION After you have your wireless card installed and configured, you will need to register your wireless card to gain access to the wireless network. To register, you simply need to open up your web browser (IE or Netscape) and you will automatically be taken to the network registration site, http://netreg.utk.edu/. Just follow the instructions and within a few minutes you should be on the wireless network.
