Windows ME installation Instructions for 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless LAN PC Card

Important Notes:

  • You may need your Windows ME CD to install this card.
  • The XJack antenna must be extended for you to connect to Nomad.
  • Please note there are many things in these instructions that are case sensitive.

Installing the Card

  1. Turn on your laptop and make sure it is finished loading all programs.
  2. Insert the wireless card into your PCMCIA slot as shown below.

  3. Windows should detect the wireless card and you should be prompted to install the necessary software. Select the box marked Automatic search for best driver and click Next.

  4. If your Nomad CD has not already been inserted into the CD-ROM drive, you may receive the following dialog box. Insert the CD and click OK.

  5. A Country Selector Dialog box will appear. Select the United States and click OK.

  6. A dialog box should appear telling you that you need to restart your computer. Click Restart.

Installing the Client Manager

  1. After your computer has finished restarting, you are ready to install the client manager. Click on My Computer / CD-ROM Drive. If the CD doesn't automatically take you to the setup, then double-click the "Menu" icon.
  2. Click on "Install Client Manager" The client manager setup should begin.
  3. If you need to download the client manager, click here.
  4. Click the Next button.

  5. The 3Com software license should now appear. Click the Accept button.
  6. You will now be asked where you want to store the client manager program files. Click Next to use the default setting
  7. A dialog box should now appear asking you where you want the client manager icons to be stored. Click Next to use the default values.
  8. The following dialog box should appear. Click Yes.

  9. When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Configuring the 3Com Client Manager

  1. When you restart, the 3Com client manager should automatically start. Select Create New Connection as shown below.

  2. The Wireless LAN Wizard should appear. Select Access Point and click Next.
  3. The computer should now prompt you with a Network dialog box. Select the box marked Manually enter the wireless network and set the Network name to nomad. Click Next.

  4. In the Security dialog box, select Use No Encryption and click Next.

  5. A Summary window should appear. Enter nomad into the Profile Name dialog box and then click Finish.

  6. Your computer is now properly configured to connect to UT's wireless network, Nomad.

Registration

After you have your wireless card installed and configured, you will need to register to gain access to the wireless network. To register, open up your web browser (IE or Netscape). You will automatically be taken to the network registration site, http://netreg.utk.edu/. Follow the online instructions and within a few minutes your computer will be ready to use Nomad.
