  1. Make sure you have all the right hardware.
You will need a personal computer that meets the minimum system requirements, a properly installed and configured network interface card, and an ethernet cable. Telephone Cables Do Not Work!
  2. Check to make sure your port is functioning properly
Check for an active port. Almost all network interface cards have at least one LED called a "link light" that indicates there is a connection to a live device at the other end of the wire. The presence of a link light usually means that you have a good connection to the switch, but not always. Some link lights do not work until the driver software has properly initialized the NIC. Many NICs have activity lights in addition to or in combination with the link light. If the activity light is blinking, then you most likely have good connection to a port on the switch that has been activated (turned on). If you do not see one or both of these indicators, it is reasonable to suspect a problem with the patch cable or the port itself.
  3. Check to see if you have a valid Internet Protocol (IP) Address.
Every computer on ResNet must have a valid Internet Protocol (IP) Address. Don't know how to get find out your IP address?
    • In Windows XP, go to Start, Run
    • In the Run box, type cmd and press enter
    • At the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter
    • Your IP address will be listed

Okay, now that you know how to find your IP address, check to make sure it is a valid IP for the Residence Halls. Your IP must start with 160.36.xxx.xxx. If your IP does not start with 160.36, then you have a problem. Try to release your address by typing ipconfig /release, and then renew it by typing ipconfig /renew in the command prompt. Now, check to see if you have a valid IP. Sometimes, Windows machines are stubborn about releasing their IP address. You might also try to reboot.
