What is Resnet

In the summer of 1997, UT began offering a dedicated, switched 10Mb ethernet connection to each student living in the Residence Halls located on-campus. These ethernet connections provide unlimited acesss to the Internet.  All you need to access the network is a personal computer that meets the minimum system requirements, an appropriate network card, and an ethernet cable. (OIT  provides free cables, subsidized by your Technology Fee.) These ethernet connections are up to 300 times faster than any dial-up connection and DO NOT REQUIRE the use of your telephone line or modem. Access is immediate, and no additional Internet service provider, like AOL is needed.  For more information on this service, costs, and required hardware, please choose one of the other options listed on our website, or you may call our Student Support Line at (865) 974-9900

What Do I Need to Access Resnet

  • Computer that meets the Minimum System Requirements (Please see list and links below)
  • Network Card (also called ethernet card, ethernet adapter, etc.) Most new desktop and laptop computers have a built-in ethernet card. Network cards can be purchased from OIT at a subsidized rate. Please see our pricing page for more details.
  • Ethernet Cable (this is NOT A TELEPHONE CABLE) You can pick up a free cable at the OIT Computer Support Service Center located in the Commons on the second floor of Hodges Library.

Supported Operating Systems & Minimum System Requirements

TCS supports the following operating systems for all of our services. To be eligible for phone and/or walk-in support, your computer must be running a supported Operating System that meets the minimum system requirements and have a working CD-ROM drive.

Please keep in mind that these are the minimums system requirements for just the Operating System. If you need us to install additional software, you will need additional hard-disk space. Click on the links below to view the system requirements for your Operating System.
