The NetReg process using Vista?

1. If Internet Explorer does not automatically go to the support page, type in https://support.utk.edu. At the bottom select CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE WITH REGISTRATION --->


2. Then log in with your NetID and NetID password.


3. When the netreg tool opens, read the information and click I understand the above information.


4. On the File Download screen, choose the Run option.


5. Verify again with the Run option.


6. After clicking on Run, the User Account Control may pop up and notify you that a program needs your permission to continue. Choose the Allow option to run.


7. It will then check to see if Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed. If SP1 is not installed then it will go through the process to install SP1. Click here to see SP1 install process. If SP1 is already installed then it will simple go to the step 8.

8. For the UTK Windows Vista Network Registration Tool select Next.


9. Antivirus Software info click OK.


10. Operating system (OS) patches and post service pack (SP) patches will now be applied. Also see: Changes Made to Your Computer During the UT Network Registration Process.


11. Then it will run through the Account Strengthening Utility, click continue.


12. Then it will list the Account Scan Results. These are the accounts on the computer that were found to have administrator rights, select Continue.


13. It will strengthen the first account, this might normally be the one that you log into Windows with, select Continue.


14. Select Keep account name if you do not want to change the account name.


15. Then it will have your account name in red, select Confirm.


16. Then it will want you to Enter a password for your account named "accountname" (accountname represents your login accounts), type in a strong password.


A. Displayed below is the Strong Password Criteria Help screen from selecting the flashing Show Help option above. This gives some criteria for strong passwords, just click the Continue button and it will take you back to Enter a password for your account named "accountname". Type in a new password and click on Submit Password.


B. If the password you entered failed then it will give you this message.

  

C. You can click on Show Password Help, and it will show you the Strong Password Criteria Help box again. Or if you select Choose a new password then it will have the weaknesses of the last password you tried to type in on the right of the password box. Just type in a password that meets the criteria then choose Submit password.


D. If the password met the criteria then you should get the password check passed box. Select Continue.


17. Type in the exact same password in the second field to confirm it, then select Confirm.


A. If the passwords don't match it will give this password match failure box. Press the Retry button below and then it will show the confirm window again. Just confirm the same password then select Confirm.


18. Then it will show the important PLEASE REMEMBER THESE CHANGES window because this will be the password needed to log into the computer upon reboot. Select Confirm password change for "accountname".


19. Then the Finalize changes box appears, click Finish.

20. It will repeat the above process for all accounts that were listed earlier (from number 11) having administrator rights.


21. If you have an account called Administrator it will say that it has discovered a weakness. It will ask to choose another account name. Click OK.


22. It will say Enter a new account name. Enter new account name and select Submit Account Name.


23. After this step it will go through the password process for this account from earlier. After all accounts are done just click OK.


24. Then it will give registering with NetReg..., select OK.


25. Then the browser will go into kiosk mode (you will not be able to browse to any place else) to the Network Registration login. Login with NetID and NetID password.


26. After logging in you will be taken to the Computing and Network Usage Policies set forth by the University. Use the scroll bar to readthe policies, then choose Accept then Continue.


27. Choose a Registration Category. Then select Continue.


28. Actual Computer Registration will begin. Hostname will be the Internet Protocol (IP) name of the computer on the network. It has to be unique, no one else on campus can have the same hostname. It can be set as your NetID.


29. After typing in the information, if it accepted the hostname you will get Registration Complete and it will show the network name of the computer. You should also get a VOLNET registration confirmation email. Click on Okay.


30. This pop-up will display, click Yes.


31. Then it says your system has successfully completed the UTK Windows Network Registration Tool. Click Finish.


32. OK, then it restarts.


33. Upon restart you will use the same account name and password that you changed or set it to during this process.

34. Then the browser will automatically go back into kiosk mode (you will not be able to browse any place else) and take you to the UT Antivirus download page. Select your affiliation.


35. If you select I am a Staff/Faculty or other KNOXVILLE CAMPUS affiliation. then you will get this page below.

If your computer still has McAfee installed you can simply click on the link that says Mcafee Removal Tool and it will immediately download the McAfee removal tool. Run the tool, then click on Proceed to download Forefront.

36. It will then take you to the OIT Software Distribution site. Login with your NetID and your NetID password.


37. If you select I am a Student (any campus affiliation). or I am Staff/Faculty or other NON-KNOXVILLE CAMPUS affiliation., it will then take you to the antivirus site to download McAfee after selecting Proceed.


38. After downloading and installing your appropriate antivirus software according to your affiliation, your computer is now registered on the University's Network and now you are ready to get on the internet.
