How does Spyware and Adware get on my computer?

Most Spyware piggybacks on other, somewhat more legitimate software, and is installed when you install free programs (such as file-sharing programs and screensaver programs).  Other vectors include email attachments, downloading video or music files from untrusted sites, and simply clicking certain links designed to exploit vulnerabilities in your web browser.
