Overview

Imagine being able to check your email as you walk from your dorm room to your morning class. Imagine being able to videoconference with a colleague in Russia as you sit in the new university mall enjoying a beautiful east Tennessee spring day. Imagine being able to use your new PDA to check the status of the NYSE, CNN, or any other website on the fly. UT's wireless computer network, Nomad, makes these futuristic dreams a reality, providing full wireless coverage throughout the UTK campus.

As the most wireless campus in the world, UT Knoxville is known both nationally and internationally for its extensive wireless network coverage. UT provides access to wireless through more than 1200 wireless access points spanning over 15 million square feet of space. Almost all academic buildings have wireless access coverage as well as many of the campus' non-academic buildings, including many of the athletic facilities, residence halls, lounges, and common areas.

More About Our Network

The wireless network is made up of over 1,200 access points located throughout the UT campus. The entire wireless network now supports 802.11b/g/n, with 802.11a available in select locations. The network is currently open, meaning that no encryption is provided between the wireless client and the access point. For more information about the ramifications of this setup, please visit the Wireless Security section of this website.
