Dell Notebook Battery Recall
On 8/15/2006 Dell, Inc. issued a recall for 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they can overheat and cause fires.
Batteries / Models Affected
The recall affects Dell notebooks shipped between April 1, 2004, and July 18, 2006. The following models are included:
- Dell Latitude D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
- Dell Inspiron 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705
- Dell Precision M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations
- Dell XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710
What to do
If your notebook is on the above list, perform the following steps:
- Go to http://dellbatteryprogram.com/.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page to "Identify Recalled Battery".
- Enter your PPID (this can be found on the bottom of your battery which should be on the bottom of the laptop) and hit "Submit PPID Number(s)".
- At this point, the website checks to make sure this is one of the batteries that needs to be replaced. If so, it will return and allow you to hit the "Order Replacement Battery" button.
- Then you will fill out the order form with the approriate shipping and contact information and hit the "Place Order" button.
- Dell will then ship you a replacement battery and a pre-paid package in which you should ship back the bad battery.
