Client Setup and Configuration (Outlook, Entourage, and Evolution)
- Windows users - Microsoft Outlook
- Mac users - Microsoft Entourage
- Linux users - Evolution
- IMAP and POP Clients* (such as Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape Mail, or Pine)
*Outlook 2003 and Entourage 2004 are available to all UT-affliated persons free of charge. If you do not want to use either of these supported products, documentation is available on connecting to your Exchange email account via IMAP. Detailed instructions for Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Netscape Mail, and Pine are provided.
Windows users - Microsoft Outlook
Note: If using Outlook from off-campus, your operating system MUST be Windows XP or Windows Vista. Earlier Windows operating systems lack certain security features which renders them unable to communicate with the Exchange server from off-campus. Therefore, if you are off campus and using a version of Windows that is not Windows XP or Vista, we recommend you use OWA.
WARNING for GroupWise Users: If you want to run BOTH the GroupWise client and Outlook on the same PC please set the mail profile to prompt.
Follow these simple steps to set up your Windows computer to use a client to connect to the Exchange email system.
Step 1: Clean your system
It is highly advisable that you run an antivirus scan with an up-to-date antivirus product such as McAfee, which is available for free to all students, faculty, and staff from the UT AntiVirus Site.
You should also run antispyware scans using products such as Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, and LavaSoft AdAware.
Step 2: Update your operating system and existing Microsoft Office products
Windows Update
In Internet Explorer, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Follow the instructions and make sure all critical updates are installed.Office Update
In Internet Explorer, go to http://officeupdate.microsoft.com. Click "Check for Updates." Follow the instructions and make sure all updates are installed. It may be necessary to perform this check more than once - keep checking back until no more updates are available.
Step 3: Install and Configure the Client
To use Outlook, you must use either Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007. If you would like to use Outlook 2003, you can download and install a preconfigured client free of chargee from UT, or if you already own Office 2003, you can configure Outlook 2003 manually. If own Office 2007, you will need to configure your client manually in order to connect to the Exchange Server.

Mac Users - Entourage 2004:
Follow these simple steps to set up your Apple computer to use a client to connect to the Exchange email system.
Step 1: Update your operating system and existing Microsoft Office products
Mac OS X Update
From the Apple menu or in System Preferences choose the Software Update option.
Office Update
In Finder, go to Applications -> Microsoft AutoUpdate, or with an Office application open go to Help -> Check for Updates.
Step 2: Install (optional) and Configure (required) the client
Client Install (Only for computers without Office 2004):
If you do not already have Office 2004, download the UT Entourage 2004 Client This client has been partially configured for the UT Exchange server; to complete the configuration, follow the instructions below.Entourage 2004 Setup Instructions (required - all Entourage users must do this step!):
Whether you are using the UT Entourage 2004 Client Installer or configuring your own Entourage 2004 installation, follow these instructions on connecting a MAC using Entourage to the Exchange Server.
Linux Users (Evolution):
Follow these instructions on connecting a Linux computer using Evolution to the UT Exchange Server. Please note that Evolution is not a supported product, and these instructions may be written for a version different than the one you are using.
IMAP and POP clients:
