OIT Exchange User Security

A secure environment is crucial to the Exchange experience. To better ensure your security, please take a moment to follow the following instructions...

  • Verify that your Operating System and Microsoft Office products are up to date

    Windows Users:*

    Windows Update
    In Internet Explorer, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Follow the instructions and make sure all critical updates are installed.

    Office Update
    In Internet Explorer, go to http://officeupdate.microsoft.com. Click "Check for Updates." Follow the instructions and make sure all updates are installed. It may be necessary to perform this check more than once - keep checking back until no more updates are available.

    Mac Users:*

    Mac OS X Update
    From the Apple menu or in System Preferences choose the Software Update option.

    Office Update
    In Finder, go to Applications -> Microsoft AutoUpdate, or with an Office application open go to Help -> Check for Updates.

    *Note that this is not a one-time fix. You should perform regular Windows and Office updates to ensure a secure computing environment.
  • Make sure your connection is secure.

    Windows Users:

    • In Outlook, select the Tools menu and click Email Accounts.
    • Select View or change existing email accounts and click Next.
    • Highlight your Exchange account and click Change....
    • Click More Settings and select the Security tab. It should look something like this:

    • Make sure you have enabled the check box as shown below that says Encrypt data between Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server We also recommend that you enable the checkbox for prompting for username and password. Leave the Logon network security option as shown (Kerberos/NTLM Password Authentication).
