- Where do I go to sign up to migrate my email from Webmail to Tmail?
You can sign up and pick a migration date at https://oit.utk.edu/exchange/migrate/
- I don’t need to keep any of my emails that are saved in Webmail. What do I need to do to start using Tmail?
You can register for a new account online. Once you have registered for the account, contact the OIT HelpDesk to have your old email account disabled. This will ensure that any emails saved in your Webmail account will not be moved into your Tmail account when the migration deadline arrives.
- Can I check my Tmail account online?
Yes, you can check your new Tmail account online at https://tmail.utk.edu.
- Will my email address change when I start using Tmail?
No, your email address and any aliases that you have will continue to work. Instead of receiving email in your old account, all new emails will be delivered to your Tmail account.
- I just signed up to have my Webmail migrated to Tmail,
when that happens will the message I am currently saving in my Webmail account
be transfered to my Tmail account? Will
all my folders also be moved? Will my
Webmail contacts and distribution lists be moved as well?
All the messages associated with your email account will be migrated to your Tmail account, including any folders that you have created. Any contacts and/or distributions lists that have been defined in Webmail will be moved to your Tmail contact list.
- I have a Webmail account, but have everything forwarded
to my personal email account because of space issues. I am afraid when the system automatically
switches me to Tmail that it will no longer work. Can I set up my Tmail account to forward email
to my personal email account?
When we migrate your Webmail account to Tmail, OIT will create the forwarding rule from Tmail to your personal email account (if you have a forwarding/routing defined for your SIMS account)?
If you would like to go ahead and set all of this up, you can contact the HelpDesk and will can assist. You can also register for a Tmail account and set up the forwarding now. To register an account, go to Tmail Account Registration and sign up. Once your account is created, go to the Tmail Account Management Tool, and log in. Click on the Mail Forwarding link to enable forwarding to your personal email account.
- I use apple mail to access my email. The website said I
should contact you before changing over to Tmail. What do I need to do to
change over my email account and still use apple mail?
We recommend that you contact the HelpDesk if you are using a client to help you sort out how best to proceed. If you have popped your email and all of the mail is stored locally on your computer, then you do not need to sign up for the migration. You can register for a Tmail account and then have your Webmail account disabled.
If you have used your client as an IMAP client, then you will need to sign up for the migration in order to have your mail moved to the Tmail account.
If you want to continue to use and IMAP or POP client after the migration, please be aware that OIT does not support IMAP and POP clients. We do recommend that you use the Microsoft Exchange clients, Outlook 2003/2007 and Entourage 2004/2008. If you choose to use an IMAP or POP client, we have provided the server configuration information on the OIT Exchange website, Exchange IMAP instructions and Exchange POP instructions.
- I am already using Outlook. Do I need to do anything to make the change
or will my account just continue to work?
If you are currently using Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 to read your SIMS/Webmail email, you do need to migrate your account to Tmail. The configuration for the Tmail account is a little different because we are using the Exchange protocol. You will notice that you have some additional functionality when using Outlook with Exchange than you have previously had. Once your Tmail account has been created, you can configure Outlook for your Tmail account. Instructions are available at Exchange Client Setup.
- I use an email client
to access my utk email. Other than changing the server names in the
preferences, will there be anything else I need to know/do? Also, I assume all
of my IMAP folders and their respective messages will be moved to exchange as
well, as part of the migration? Or will I need to do that by hand?
All of your IMAP folders will be moved during migration. To take advantage of all the functionality of Microsoft Exchange, OIT recommends and support the Microsoft Exchange compatible clients, Outlook 2003/2007 and Entourage 2004/2008.
If you prefer to use another IMAP client such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird, we do have the configuration information available at Exchange IMAP Setup.
- I have signed up for the migration, but I currently use
a client to pop my email. Will my
email be moved to the new server?
Only email that is saved to the server will be migrated. Typically users that have popped their email have saved their messages to their local computer and they are NOT saved on the email server. To check and see what you have saved on the server, log in to Webmail. Any emails saved in your Webmail account will be moved to your Tmail account.
- Will my cell phone work with my Tmail account?
You can configure your Smart Phone to work with your Tmail account. We have instructions online for some of the popular phone operating systems, including Windows Mobile and Palm OS. You can also use the IMAP settings to configure email for your phone. For setup instructions, see the Exchange/Tmail Setup Page.
- Why is OIT retiring Webmail and forcing everyone to
migrate to Tmail?
OIT is in the process of consolidating several e-mail systems including SIMS into the new Tmail Exchange system. Tmail has a log of features that SIMS/Webmail did not have. We have also increased the quota for faculty, staff, and students to provide you with additional storage space.
- What will happen if I don’t sign up to migrate?
If you do not choose a date to migrate, then OIT will migrate your account after the deadline has passed. At that time, new emails sent to you will go to your Tmail account. You may be able to log in to your Webmail account for a week or two after the migration, but you will not receive any new emails in that account.
If OIT does migrate your account, you will need to setup your Tmail password before you have access to the account. To create your Tmail password, go to Exchange Password Reset and follow the instructions.
- How successful have the migrations been in the past?
Over 9500 accounts have successfully used the self-migration tool to move their mail from Webmail to Tmail.
- When I sign up to migrate my email account, will my access to other UT websites, i.e. Webmail, Blackboard, and CPO, be affected?
If you create a new password during the migration process, your NetID password will also be updated. Many UT websites require your NetID and password to authenticate. You will need to use your new password when you log in to these websites. Examples are Webmail, Blackboard, CPO, Library Database, OIT Computer Labs, etc.
When changing your password, remember it takes up to 15 minutes for the new password to take effect!
