Digital Media Services (DMS)

The Office of Information Technology (OIT)
and the
UT Libraries
have joined to create the Digital Media Service (DMS). The goal of DMS is to become the "one-stop shop" for digital media needs on campus. DMS will digitize, store and deliver audio, video, images, and text for instructional use at no cost to faculty members. Digitization services for non-instructional use will also be available at competitive rates. DMS will assist customers in securing permissions and managing other copyright issues or provide referrals for related services: use of technology in
instruction, video production, software training, etc.

SunSITE
- Sun Software, Information, and Technology Exchange is part of
Sun Microsystems'
pioneering program to showcase the value of networked information
technology through grants and partnerships with selected universities.
From its inception at the
University of North Carolina
in 1992, the SunSITE program has grown to include more than 25
universities around the world. SunSITEs have provided on-line libraries,
software distribution centers, and electronic publishing agencies for
their respective regions and for the Internet at large. Moreover, SunSITEs
have shown tremendous leadership in creating, implementing, and exhibiting
to the Internet some of the most innovative information technology
available.
From the beginning, SunSITE has been guided by three main goals; help
promote an infrastructure in which new technologies can develop and
thrive; identify, test and deploy specific technologies that meet the
academic community’s demand for new services, or that expand services
already offered by ORIT; and finally, to promote a better understanding of
how emerging technologies are changing the nature of the University and
its relationship with the community.
SunSITE’s activities can be divided roughly into 5 broad areas: software
distributions (including development, dissemination and support); digital
libraries (focusing primarily on caching and replication); audio- and
video-over-IP; distributed education; and community outreach.
SunSITE’s greatest contribution to the development of a robust and dynamic
infrastructure is in its distribution of open source software and
documentation. SunSITE has grown to become one of the major hubs for open
source software, not only for the research communities on the UT campuses
and in Oak Ridge, but also to other major research and educational
institutions nationwide.

Technology Evaluation (TE)
– TE provides three essential services: 1) test and evaluate digital video and audio technologies to determine which are viable business applications for the University, 2) consult and collaborate with faculty and other campus units on pilot deployments, and 3) actively participate in regional and national next-generation IT and networking initiatives that relate to digital and audio issues.
TE integrates similar and dissimilar digital A/V software and hardware to determine the viability of use in education and business applications. Product functionality is thoroughly examined through pilot projects and test bed applications. Some of these tests are done internally, while many involve partnering with faculty and staff interested in the technology.
A significant consultation service is provided to faculty and staff wishing to use or purchase desktop video equipment or conduct desktop videoconferences. Questions are fielded from both novice and savvy faculty and staff using or wanting to use digital A/V in their classroom or research. State agencies, non-profit organizations, other UT campuses, and other local companies frequently seek digital audio/visual advice from the TE staff.
TE actively participates in regional and national IT and network initiatives, and seeks partnerships and collaborations with other
like-minded universities and organizations.
