SUBJECT: New UT Anti-virus Software Installation

In preparing for the expiration of UT's contract for Norton Anti-virus from

Symantec Corporation, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) submitted

a Request For Quotation for anti-virus products. After a thorough

evaluation of bids and products, OIT chose McAfee Anti-virus from Network

Associates. The new contract allows for the installation of McAfee

Anti-virus on all University owned and personally owned computers of

current faculty, staff, and students. All McAfee costs for faculty and

staff machines (University owned and personally owned) will be funded by

OIT.

With UT's new McAfee contract in place, OIT is no longer able to provide

updated virus definitions for the Norton Anti-virus product. This means

that your computer will not be protected from new viruses occurring in the

future.

If you have not already done so, we urge you download and install McAfee

Anti-virus from the following Web site: https://antivirus.utk.edu

After downloading the product, please start the installation by

double-clicking on the downloaded icon. The installation will uninstall

Norton Anti-virus and install McAfee Anti-virus. After McAfee Anti-virus is

installed, computers will automatically receive virus definition updates

from the OIT Central Anti-virus Server. OIT has configured McAfee to allow

users to modify settings and schedule scans, thereby allowing users the

flexibility of configuring the product to meet their needs.

The McAfee Anti-virus software is presently available from the Web site for

all versions of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. Macintosh anti-virus

software should be available from the Web site by July 25th.

If you are a Systems Administrator and need anti-virus software for Novell,

Lotus Domino, MS Exchange, Solaris, or Linux servers, there is a separate

link on the Web page for these products.
